The Student Internship Programme was derived from the SIF ACE Initiative and was piloted at Dundalk Institute of Technology in September 2007. Among the achievements of the Student Interns is the development and maintenance of a student-led website which can be accessed at: studententerprise@dkit. The student enterprise website encourages enterprise and entrepreneurship throughout the student population using an approach that is unique amongst the Higher Education Institutions in Ireland. There is widespread support for the Student Internship Programme from the Director, Governing Body, Academic Community and from external organisations such as County Enterprise Boards.
In the words of an experienced Intern: “Instilling a sense of enterprise in the mindset of students can be a tough challenge though the rewards in doing so make it all worthwhile. Initially we were constantly approaching students extolling the virtues of enterprise, but in a turnaround of events, students are now approaching us with their own enterprise ventures and seeking our assistance in how best to develop their business and achieve their goals. Particularly in the current economic climate, students have begun to take more ownership for their working future and being self-employed is now a viable option. We plan on being a vital cog between enterprise and the students and provide the platform from which student businesses can prosper.”
