Through the Research and Developmental endeavours of its Academic Staff, DkIT has developed a strong applied Research and Development reputation in Software Development, Electronics and Engineering Design, Applied Humanities, Cultural Studies, Enterprise Development & Innovation as well as pioneering studies in the fields of Renewable Energy, Digital Media and Ageing in place. The evolution of this range of Research expertise has a direct bearing on new course development, on staff development and on the relevance of graduate provision to the skills needs of the Regional and National economy.

The Institute is focusing on four research and development themes:

• Entrepreneurship and Innovation
• Informatics and Creative Media
• Sustainable Energy and Environment

It has six centres conducting research across these four thematic areas:

• Smooth Muscle Research Centre
• Centre for Renewable Energy
• National Centre for Freshwater Studies
• The Netwell Centre
• The Software Technology Research Centre (SToRC)
• Centre for Entrepreneurship Research (CER)
